
Your dryer turns on, the drum tumbles, the cycle runs to the end — and the clothes come out warm and still damp. One load takes two full cycles to dry. Everything works except the one thing that matters.
That was the call on a Maytag Commercial Technology dryer (model MEDB765FW0) here in Houston. The homeowner assumed the heating element had died. It had — but the element wasn’t the real problem.
Why a Dryer Runs But Won’t Heat — the Usual Suspects
When a dryer tumbles fine but produces little or no heat, the fault is almost always in one of these:
- Restricted airflow from lint buildup. The most common root cause, and the one people never see. Lint packs into the blower housing and around the heater long after the filter stops catching it. Airflow drops, heat can’t escape, and the machine cooks itself.
- Failed heating element. The part that actually makes heat. When it burns out you get no heat at all — but on an airflow-starved dryer, it usually burned out because of the airflow, not on its own.
- Blown thermal fuse. A one-time safety device. When the dryer overheats, this fuse sacrifices itself to cut power to the heat circuit. Some models then run with no heat; others won’t start at all.
- Failed high-limit thermostat. Sits on the heater housing and trips when temperatures climb too high. Chronic overheating wears it out.
- Clogged exterior vent duct. The homeowner-side run to the outside. Even a perfect repair inside won’t hold if the wall duct is packed solid.
Here’s the part most people miss: on an overheating dryer these don’t fail one at a time. The element, the thermal fuse, and the high-limit thermostat go together, by design — the safety parts trip trying to save the machine while the element burns out. Replace only the element and you’re back in a few months.
The Maytag That Took Two Cycles to Dry
The dryer ran normally in every way except heat. Drum turned, controls responded, cycle completed — clothes came out barely warm. The owner had already replaced nothing and called before guessing at parts, which is the right move.
Tumbling with no heat points at the heat circuit, not the motor. So we pulled the cabinet apart to look at the element, the safeties, and the airflow path behind them.
What We Found Inside
Heavy lint, packed around the blower and through the heater housing. Not the filter — deeper in, where nothing reaches without taking the machine apart. Years of it.
That buildup was the whole story. Restricted airflow meant heat had nowhere to go, so the heating chamber ran far hotter than designed. The element failed from the chronic overheat, and the two safety parts — thermal fuse and high-limit thermostat — went with it, exactly as they’re built to.
Swapping just the element would have been a parts-swap, not a repair. It would have burned out again on the same trapped heat.
The Fix: All Three Parts, Plus the Airflow
We replaced all three together — heating element, thermal fuse, and high-limit thermostat — because on an overheat they fail as a set, and reusing a stressed safety part is asking for a repeat visit.
Then the part that actually prevents it happening again: we cleared the internal airflow path. Blower housing, heater housing, the ducting inside the cabinet — all of it back to clean.
Reassembled and tested through a full cycle. Steady heat, drying time back to a single normal load. What we do NOT do is climb into the wall duct — more on that below.
The Vent Duct: Where DIY Ends
There are two airflow paths, and they’re not the same job.
Inside the cabinet — blower, heater housing, internal ducting — that’s what we clean during the repair, and it’s where the damaging buildup was here.
The exterior duct — the run from the back of the dryer to the outside — is the homeowner’s side. If it’s a short, straight shot to an outside wall, it’s reasonable to clean yourself: pull the dryer out, disconnect the duct, vacuum it through. If it’s a long run, goes up through the roof, or twists through the house, that’s a job for a duct-cleaning specialist with the right equipment. We’ll tell you which situation you’re looking at, but the in-wall run isn’t something we handle.
A blocked exterior duct undoes everything. You can replace every part inside and the dryer will overheat again if the air can’t get out.
What You Can Check Yourself
Before it gets to burned parts:
- Clean the lint filter every load. Every one, not most.
- Check airflow at the outside vent. Run the dryer, go outside, feel the flap. Weak airflow means the duct is restricted.
- Watch drying times. When one load starts needing two cycles, that’s the early warning — airflow is dropping. Catch it here and it’s a cleaning, not a parts job.
Opening the cabinet to reach the blower and heater is where it stops being DIY. That’s live 240V and components that need testing, not guessing.
