• Not heating

  A microwave that runs, lights up, and spins but won't heat has usually lost the part that makes the energy — most often the magnetron, or a component that feeds it like the high-voltage diode or capacitor. These parts are not safe to poke around: a microwave capacitor can hold a dangerous charge long after it's unplugged. • Not turning on

  When a microwave is completely dead — no display, no light — we start with power: the outlet, the plug, and the internal line fuse. A rattle can just be the roller guide out of place. We pin down where the noise is coming from, since a straining magnetron is a very different repair than a worn turntable motor.
• Sparking inside

  Sparking or arcing inside is a sign to stop using it until it's checked. The most common cause is a burnt or worn waveguide cover — a small part behind the side wall that shields the magnetron's opening. Metal in the cavity or a chipped interior wall can do it too. We replace the waveguide cover and check the cavity, because continued arcing can damage the magnetron and turn a small fix into a big one.
• Turntable not spinning

  When the plate stops turning, the food heats unevenly even if the microwave is otherwise fine. Usually it's the turntable motor underneath the cavity, a broken drive coupler, or the roller guide off its track. It can also be a control board issue telling the motor not to run. We check the coupler and motor first — the simple, common causes — before looking at the board, so it's a quick, inexpensive fix in most cases.
• Buttons not responding

  When the keypad stops responding — some buttons or all of them — the usual cause is a worn membrane keypad or a fault in the control board it connects to. Years of pressing wear out the contacts behind the panel. We test whether it's the keypad or the board behind it, because they're separate parts, and replacing the right one keeps the repair affordable instead of swapping the whole control assembly on a guess.
• Burning smell

  A burning or electrical smell from a microwave means something inside is overheating — often the waveguide cover, the magnetron, or a component on the control board. Stop using it if you smell burning, since the parts involved carry high voltage.
