
When a built-in oven stops heating but still powers on, the heating element is rarely the culprit. More often the fault sits in the electronics — especially after a voltage spike.

Why an Oven Won’t Heat but Still Turns On
The display lights up, the fan runs, the controls respond — and nothing gets hot. That combination narrows things down quickly, because whatever failed left the low-voltage side alive while the heating circuit stayed dead.
- One leg of the 240V supply is gone. Electric ovens run on two hot legs. Lose one and the board still powers up on 120V, but the element never heats. This is the first thing worth ruling out.
- The door is still locked from a self-clean cycle. If the latch didn’t release, the oven refuses to heat and often shows no error at all. More common than people expect.
- Bake element. Look inside — a failed element usually has a visible break, blister, or burn mark. If it looks intact, the problem is upstream.
- Temperature sensor. A sensor reading out of range makes the board think the oven is already hot, so it never calls for heat. Usually throws a code.
- Relay on the control board. The relay that switches power to the element can fail while everything else on the board keeps working.
- Transformer on the power board. After a surge it can overheat internally and stop supplying stable low voltage. Everything looks alive, but the heating cycle never starts — exactly what happened here.
Two of these you can check without tools: flip the breaker fully off and back on (both legs), and make sure the door isn’t sitting in the locked state. Peek at the element too, while you’re there.
Past that you’re testing a live 240V circuit and a board with mains voltage on it. That’s where it stops being a DIY job.

Initial Complaint & Early Assessment
The customer said the oven turned on normally, but the temperature never climbed. Display fine, fan fine, no heat.
Symptoms like that point at the electronics rather than anything mechanical, so we started with a full electrical inspection. Power surges are a common reason modern ovens stop responding correctly, and this unit showed several signs consistent with surge damage.
Removing the Oven & Accessing the Electronics
We pulled the built-in oven from the cabinet and opened the control area. That gave us access to the main circuit board — the part handling communication between sensors, relays, and the heating components.
One corner of the low-voltage section looked slightly darkened, like it had overheated at some point. That area is usually first to suffer when a surge hits an appliance, so it gave us a starting point.
What We Discovered During Diagnostics
Going through the board section by section, two things showed up right away:
- several burned traces along the low-voltage power path
- transformer readings that didn’t match normal values
Both lined up with what the homeowner described — the oven looked alive, but the heating cycle never started.
Root Cause: Burned Transformer on the Power Board
The exact failure point was a burned transformer on the control board. When a transformer cooks internally after a surge, it can no longer feed stable power to the logic components — so the relays that control the heating element never engage.
We removed the damaged transformer, repaired the affected traces, and fitted a compatible replacement. After reinforcing the repaired area and cleaning the board, every low-voltage circuit was retested for stability.
Reassembly & Final Testing
With the board back together, we reinstalled the oven and ran it the way a homeowner actually would, not just a quick bench check.
We warmed it at several temperature settings to confirm the relays engaged and the element was getting stable power. Then we held it at a high temperature for a longer stretch to see whether it could hold heat without dropping or cycling oddly.
Everything behaved. No unexpected relay clicks, no temperature swings, no hesitation switching between modes.
