
You open the freezer and the ice cream is soft. Or the milk in the fridge doesn’t feel properly cold anymore. The appliance is running, humming away as usual — it just isn’t doing its job.
We see this constantly on calls around Houston. A freezer sitting at 20°F instead of 0°F still feels cold when you reach in, but food isn’t being stored safely at that temperature.
The useful thing is that which part isn’t cold tells you a lot about what’s wrong.
Start Here: What’s Warm and What Isn’t
This narrows it down faster than anything else:
- Fridge warm, freezer still cold. Almost always airflow. Cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the fridge compartment — if the evaporator fan has failed or the evaporator coil is iced over, the freezer stays fine while the fridge slowly warms.
- Both warm, compressor running constantly. Points at the sealed system, dirty condenser coils, or a failed condenser fan. The machine is trying and can’t shed heat.
- Both warm, compressor not running at all. Start relay, compressor, or control board. Usually silent apart from the interior fan.
- Cooling on and off, frost building up inside. Defrost system — heater, thermostat, or timer. Ice blocks the airflow path and cooling drops over days rather than suddenly.
What Usually Causes It
- Condenser coils packed with dust. The most common and the most fixable. Coils shed heat; when they’re coated, the compressor runs longer and cools less. Pet hair makes it worse and faster.
- Condenser or evaporator fan motor. A fan that’s seized or slowing down kills cooling even though everything else works. Often audible — a click, a hum, or unusual quiet where there used to be airflow.
- Defrost failure. The evaporator ices up until air can’t pass through it. Classic sign: the freezer works, the fridge doesn’t, and there’s frost visible at the back of the freezer.
- Door seal. A gasket that’s hardened or torn lets warm humid air in continuously — in Houston summers that alone can cost several degrees, and it’s one of the cheaper things we fix during a refrigerator repair visit.
- Temperature sensor. If the board is being told the fridge is already cold, it stops calling for cooling.
- Sealed system — compressor or refrigerant leak. The expensive end. Runs constantly, never gets cold, and on older units it’s often the point where replacement makes more sense.
What’s Worth Checking Yourself
Four things, no tools needed:
Pull it out and look at the coils. Usually behind a panel at the back or underneath at the front. If they’re grey with dust, vacuum them. This alone fixes a fair number of the calls we get.
Check the vents inside. Cold air enters the fridge compartment through vents, normally at the back. Food stacked against them blocks the flow, and the fridge warms while the freezer stays fine.
Look for frost at the back of the freezer. A thin even layer is normal. A solid sheet of ice means the defrost system isn’t working.
Test the door seal. Close the door on a banknote. If it slides out with no resistance, the gasket isn’t sealing.
Past those, you’re into fan motors, defrost heaters, and sealed-system work — none of which is a DIY job.
Why Houston Is Harder on Refrigerators
Long hot summers and high humidity mean the appliance works harder for more months of the year. Compressors run longer, condenser fans do more hours, door seals face bigger temperature differences every time someone opens the door.
None of that breaks a refrigerator by itself. It just means components that would last a decade elsewhere wear out sooner here — which is why coil cleaning matters more than most people think.
Why Catching It Early Is Cheaper
Most people wait until the fridge stops cooling entirely. By then a struggling compressor has often been running near-continuously for weeks, and what would have been a fan motor or a coil clean has become something bigger.
A refrigerator that’s slightly warm is a diagnostic visit. A refrigerator that’s failed completely can be a sealed-system repair — and that’s a different conversation about cost.
